How To Properly Wash Your Hands To Protect Yourself From Illness

Disease Conditions:

It is that time of year again when people are catching the flu and colds.
You are in constant contact with these viral and bacterial invaders. These invaders are invisible and get into your system through your mucus membranes.

How do they get there you wonder? Think about this.

You are on a commute train and the lady next to you is holding a sweet little baby with a crusty nose. The baby sneezes and spreads her germs. The mom takes a used tissue and wipes the baby's face and then brushes the diaper bag off with her hands. The toddler drops her bottle. The mother thanks you by shaking your hand. The germs from the baby are now on your hand from touching the mother's hand.

You get off the commute train and stop at the coffee store. You order a hot coffee, but to make sure you wont burn your mouth again, you stick your finger in the coffee to test the temperature and lick it off. The heat system kicks in and some dust from the vent blows into your eye and you use your finger to rub your eye with. The paper looks interesting so you pick it up to read. The morning paper is stuck together with someone else's bagel creme cheese, so you lick your finger to get more traction to unstick the pages and turn them. You itch your nose with the same hand too.

You have introduced into your body, at least 4 times in the last 30 minutes, the same cold germs the toddler had.

Do you wonder when you did that?? Here's when you did it. Let me count them for you.

1. Testing the temp of your coffee with your finger, then licking it.
2. Rubbing the dust out of your eye.
3. Licking your finger to turn the page of the newspaper.
4. Rubbing the itch from your nose.

Since most viruses have a 24 to 36 hour incubation period, you can best assure yourself, by the weekend, yes the one where everyone is coming over to celebrate your sons birthday, you will have the same cold that sweet little baby on the commute train had. You can also be assured that most people that leave your house after the party will have that same cold a few days later. This happens because everything you touch will have your germs on it.
How can this be avoided?

By washing your hands before you ordered your coffee!

15 to 20 seconds of washing your hands with soap and water can stop the spread of germs. Our eyes, nose, and mouth can be the entry door for germs. When you touch those areas, you are literally putting the germ into your body!

In a pinch, you can use hand sanitizer. They can cover you in a pinch. These don't replace soap and water.
